On October 4, the United Way and the Nanaimo Coalition to End Homelessness organized a candidates' forum on Housing and Homelessness. I was pleased to attend, although an unfortunate mix-up resulted in my not being able to introduce myself from the stage. However, I was able to meet many citizens who visited my table and exchange views. Briefly, I endorse the priorities identified in Nanaimo's Action Plan to End Homelessness and also the City's Affordable Housing Strategy which has been developed. Priorities in the term ahead would be to focus on the objectives as identified and ensure that policy direction is in place to achieve the short and longer-term goals. There are several strategies the City can do to increase affordable housing, and we also need to work together with B.C. Housing. For me, Housing and Homelessness issues need to be kept front and centre as important parts of the Social Equity pillar of our Strategic Plan.
