RCMP Performance Plan

A substantial percentage of our City's annual budget is connected to community safety providers such as Fire Rescue and Police personnel. And while the City cannot dictate priorities to RCMP, they do consult and seek Council approval. Such was the case this past Monday, when Superintendent Eric Rochette presented the 2026/27 Nanaimo RCMP Annual Performance Plan in an open meeting of Council. Councillors had an opportunity to ask questions and gather information. The following priorities were approved as presented: 1. Crime Reduction 2. Youth 3. Road Safety 4. Employee Wellness 5. Inclusion and Reconciliation 6. Community Public Safety 7. Recruiting. Details on each area were provided, together with specific strategies. One disturbing statistic given was that mental health related calls to RCMP showed a 20% increase, along with a 25% increase in files related to "causing a disturbance". Some good news was that our City's violent crime rate is trending downwards.
