Downtown Nanaimo was a busy place last Thursday evening. Commercial Street was packed for the opening night of the Chamber of Commerce Night Market. But also for the official torch lighting ceremony to launch the upcoming Nanaimo 2025 55+ B.C. Games. It was my pleasure to act as MC for the torch lighting, held at the entry to Diana Krall Plaza. The 55+ Games (formerly Seniors' Games) will be held in our city this coming September 9-13. Approximately 2700 athletes from around the province will be here along with family and friends, taking part in 23 sports held at 20 local venues. It is a huge event, and a huge tourism opportunity for our city. It is also a lot of work to organize, and that job is being headed up by Games president Diana Johnstone and a board of volunteer directors. Roughly 1000 volunteers will be needed help make everything successful, and there are many ways for people to get involved.
