Dissenting Votes
There is a rule of good governance that an individual cannot publicly criticize a decision of Council. Which I agree with. However, there is nothing wrong with saying that, while you respect the will of Council, you personally disagree with the decision. That was the case several times this past term with me. Here are three examples where I was a dissenting voice and personally disagreed: 1. A motion which passed to limit the ability of new homes to connect with natural gas as a power supply. Citing opposition of use of natural gas, Council passed this which affected local jobs and choice of heating sources for homeowners. 2. A motion to endorse a letter from the forest industry to the provincial government asking it to fulfill its mandate re forestry. Council denied the endorsement, indicating lack of support for the forest industry. It was a blow to the local forest industry workers. 3. Re-design of Metral Drive, narrowing the street to allow for wide boulevards and bike lanes, but eliminating right turn lanes and restricting street parking and traffic flow. I did not support the changes. Bike lanes are fine, but not at the expense of efficient traffic flow. As stated, I must respect the will of Council - but I want people to know where I stood with my vote on the issues.
