A huge development planned for the south end of our city took a big step forward recently, when Council gave third reading approval to the necessary zoning amendment. The giant project will take years to complete, but will eventually see hundreds of new homes in the Cinnabar Valley area, along with community amenities. And on the other side of the highway, the project includes commercial and industrial space in Cedar and the Duke Point area needed for economic development. Approval came following a public hearing, where most opposition spoke to traffic congestion and the need for improved access and safety. Those are already an issue, and in my opinion will be addressed sooner due to the development. Council supported the project by a 7-2 vote, with Councillors Brown and Geselbracht opposed, calling it urban sprawl. Others including myself disagreed. The Sandstone development will occur within our urban containment boundaries, and has genereally wide support from the south end community.
