Signs, Signs, Everywhere a Sign
The municipal election period is definitely underway, as we see by the number of large and small signs along the highway and local roads. More than I recall seeing in past, but of course we have a total of 4 candidates for Nanaimo Mayor, and 40 for Council. And the reality is that name recognition counts for a lot in local elections. That said, I hope that voters don't simply cast a ballot for candidates with the most signs. For me, a few signs that indicate the name of the candidate should be enough. From that, voters can take the next step to research websites or facebook pages to learn about the candidates: what their history is of community involvement, and what their values and beliefs are. Let's hope that voters do their homework and try to learn about the candidates so they can make informed decisions on October 17.
